My dearest Ryksa,
A tremendous place! The stillness and silence is wonderfully soothing after the assaults of previous public spaces. After only five hours recharging in this cloister, suddenly, as if channelling the profession of surveyor, I began tapping the flags with my toe. I called softly, “Ryksa! Are you under there, my sweet Polish girl?” You will immediately understand my little joke, dearest, as that Bohemian Queen riven by fortune-reversal is your namesake. Oh!
In haste, but no less affection, your Strachan

Dear Mr Oddbodanov,
I suspect our communiqués are athwart. Meantime, in the spirit of kindness to strangers, how coincidental that the town here is also under ‘siege’. We must tolerate another season of ‘festival’ which gets right on my neuralgia. Like you I despair of my appearance, which resembles a burst sofa, but I cannot get to my coiffeur! These crowds are only for the strongest of swimmers. But I digress. Please, I beg you, whoever you are, take the utmost care with any pagan ventures! They are pagan after all.
Yours sincerely, Mrs Trolley (Euphorbia)

Dearest, most noble Ryksa,
After my initial confusion, I find a way into this atmosphere by the simple substitution of one feature: your divine self. Imagining you with me I become myself ennobled, and can appreciate this finery. How I wish I could honour you as you deserve with such riches. Thanks to your generous spirit and a magnificent lunch I now peel back the layers of theatrical excess to reveal more sinister hysterias. If it wasn’t for your constant warmth, my dearest companion, my spine would be now an icicle.
Your humble servant, Strachan Scrachich

My dearest Ryksa,
How wrong I was to expect sombre and depressive tones in this fortress. Where is the reverence for centuries of abuse and suffering? The acknowledgment of countless unjust incarcerations, violent military clashes, decades of siege and oppression? No, this palace is determined to remember only its earliest days of opulent party! Constantly I hear the tootling of pipes. I wonder if the very hill it sits upon is reclaiming its spirit for pagan purposes.
With nauseating jollity, your Strachan Scrachich

Mr Oddbodanov,
Thank you for your postcards. Who are you? I do not believe we have met. I do not recognise your name, spiral or otherwise! I have on occasion been described as owlish, but certainly never horny. In any case, my name is not Ryksa. Perhaps you have me confused with an acquaintance.
Kind regards, Euphorbia Trolley (Mrs)

My dearest Ryksa,
My eardrums still echo those infernal horns. At last I am extracted from the contortions. My spine is twisted all the wrong way and my hair stands out in every direction. You will not recognise this spiral Oddbodanov! These being-friendly people press themselves all upon me and fold me into inhuman shapes. How I wish you were with me to show them your so wonderful curves and bendiness. The very thought of being so pressed—but luckily I have not space. Tomorrow I go to Špilberk Hrad (Castle) – if it pleases you, write to me there.
In tender bruises, your Strachan Scrachich

Rubbish pencil sketch of town square and funfair carousel

September 19, 11:30
My dearest Ryksa –
Here I am! Already I find the town has a noisy funfair. The citizens parade about wearing winged helmets! With beaks and horns! These ‘raptorheads’ make such terrible screeches my blood travels backwards in my pipes. My head tingles with the drumming and stripes of my hair have turned white! It will not sit down. How I wish you were with me to make sense of these cultural themes and the accompanying peculiar physical contortions…
Yours with everlasting affection, Strachan Scrachich Oddbodanov.
